The London Marathon has achieved a remarkable fundraising milestone, raising a record £73.5 million ($98.28 million) for charity, according to race organizers who announced the news on Wednesday. This event is touted as the largest annual one-day fundraising event in the world.
The amount raised surpassed the previous record of £66.4 million, which was set in 2019, during the 44th edition of the marathon held on April 21, where over 53,000 runners participated.
In their final report, the London Marathon organizers stated that the total amount raised after the 2024 event has exceeded £1.3 billion since the marathon’s inception in 1981.
Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, expressed gratitude to all participants, saying, “We salute every single participant who has contributed to this world record-breaking total of £73.5 million for the thousands of charities which provide essential services to so many.”
Additionally, Enthuse, the official online fundraising partner for the London Marathon, reportedly raised £30 million on its platform.
The next edition of the London Marathon is scheduled for April 27.
