The recent participation of the young athletes from Lomaivuna Primary School at the Get Into Rugby Festival has been a significant opportunity for exposure, according to their coach, Maca Kaloudonuvuruna. The team made the journey from Naitasiri to take part in the one-day event held at Bidesi Park in Laucala Bay, Suva.

Kaloudonuvuruna highlighted that the primary objective of their involvement in the festival was to provide the players with a platform to gain exposure to the sport. “My aim for the team is to expose them; that’s the main important thing,” she stated, noting that the players often watch high-profile tournaments like sevens and 15s and this festival is a chance for them to experience rugby firsthand.

The team’s participation was guided by the principles encapsulated in the acronym DRIPS, which stands for discipline, respect, integrity, passion, and solidarity. These values align with the broader mission of GIR Plus, which seeks to promote a holistic approach to sports in schools.

During the event, Kaloudonuvuruna also reflected on the training regimen of the team. She mentioned that most of her students are part of the team, allowing for effective and consistent training sessions. “We’ve been training every time, every day,” she said, detailing that morning sessions occur whenever possible, ensuring the team is well prepared.

This experience not only enhances the players’ skills but also fosters teamwork and camaraderie among the students. Such initiatives can inspire young athletes to pursue their love for sports while developing essential life skills, potentially paving the path for future athletes.

Overall, the event served as a valuable stepping stone for the young players of Lomaivuna Primary School, nurturing their passion for rugby and empowerment through sport.
