LOMAIVUNA High School is resolutely overcoming the challenges posed by a fire that ravaged four classrooms and important training equipment last year. Despite these setbacks, the school has fielded three teams—under-15, under-17, and under-19—in the Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition, which commenced recently with matches held across the eastern and western regions.
The competition is a significant event for youth participation, with over 100 teams across the nation competing. Matches in the South-East division took place at St. Marcelin primary school grounds, featuring 10 teams in the U15 category, 8 in U17, and 7 in U19.
Assistant coach Manasa Radrotini shared the difficulties posed by a lack of proper training facilities and limited resources but stressed the team’s commitment to their goals. “A small donation allowed us to get some equipment, and efforts are underway to rebuild our classrooms,” he noted. The focus, according to Radrotini, is not solely on winning but rather on providing opportunities for the players to gain invaluable competition experience. “The results will come with time; they just need to stay disciplined and take it one game at a time,” he elaborated.
Radrotini sees rugby as a vital tool for guiding youth away from negative influences, such as drugs and crime, emphasizing that it imparts essential life skills, discipline, and healthy living habits. “Youths today are surrounded by toxic environments, but rugby teaches them discipline, healthy living, and life skills that will help them in the future,” he said.
In their opening matches, Lomaivuna High School’s U15 team achieved a commendable 16-6 victory over Ratu Sukuna Memorial School, while the U19 team faced a tougher challenge, losing 4-12 to Nasinu Secondary School. The Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League competition continues every Saturday until the grand final on April 26.
