Logging Waste Threatens Marine Life in Bua: Urgent Action Needed!

Concerns are mounting that waste from logging companies may soon be entering the sea off Bua, raising alarms about potential environmental degradation in the province. Aisea Rabitukoli, a conservation officer in Bua, expressed worries over how this waste could damage the ecosystem and disturb the marine environment’s balance.

Rabitukoli highlighted that logging operations produce significant amounts of waste. While some of this waste is typically handled and disposed of responsibly, there is increasing anxiety about the possibility of it being dumped into the sea.

During a workshop organized by the Wildlife Conservation Society, Rabitukoli urged for intervention from the Ministry of Environment. He stated, “We have been trying to address that this week, but I believe with Government intervention this will be addressed as soon as possible.”

In response, Kalikeni Sirivalu, an officer from the Department of Environment, acknowledged the concerns raised by Rabitukoli. He assured that he would inform his team to visit the affected areas and tackle the issue with urgency.
