Fiji rugby sevens player Ponipate Loganimasi is expected to make his Test debut for the Flying Fijians in the Pacific Nations Cup final against Japan at Hanazono Rugby Stadium in Osaka tomorrow.
This development follows Flying Fijians head coach Mick Byrne’s decision to replace Epeli Momo on the wing with Ilaisa Droasese, creating an opportunity for Loganimasi to join the team from the bench.
Byrne expressed optimism about Loganimasi’s performance in training, stating, “He’s training very well and he looks awesome,” highlighting his potential to debut following his Olympic Games silver medal achievement.
The competition for a place in the Match 23 squad has been intense, with rookie lock Mesake Vocevoce and prop Meli Tuni also returning. Vocevoce was absent during the semi-final match against the USA due to the passing of his father, while Tuni steps in for the injured Peni Ravai.
Byrne noted the hot and humid weather conditions during preparations but praised the team’s organization and readiness. He mentioned that the players, despite some carrying injuries, are managing well in training. Byrne also pointed out Isaiah Armstrong-Ravula’s exceptional performance at fullback as the team focuses solely on the upcoming final against Japan, which kicks off at 10:05 PM.
