Repeka Koroi and Veronika Rabuliwaisavu, talented athletes from Vudibasoga Catholic School in Seaqaqa, Macuata, have been awarded full scholarships to Mahatma Gandhi Memorial (MGM) High School, recognizing their outstanding performances at the 2024 Tuckers Ice-Cream Fiji Primary Schools Athletics Championships held last month.
Koroi, hailing from Korovuli Village, secured two gold medals in the Under-14 girls’ 800 and 1500-meter races. Similarly, Rabuliwaisavu, representing Lomaloma Village, achieved remarkable success by winning gold in the Under-13 girls’ 400 meters and taking home silver in the Under-13 girls’ 200 meters.
Both athletes expressed gratitude to their coach and teacher, Iosefo Apisai of Nasealevu Village, who played a significant role in their training. Apisai expressed his pride in his students and highlighted the benefits of their hostel arrangements, which facilitated focused training alongside peers.
Under a disciplined training schedule, Apisai noted the impressive achievement of Macuata South schools, collecting a total of five gold, three silver, and two bronze medals at the championships. He also commended parents for trusting teachers to look after their children, which provided a conducive environment for success in both academics and sports.
Repeka, who aspires to be a primary school teacher and was the dux of her Year Eight class, dedicated her achievements to her father, Epeli Balawa. She shared her dream of representing Fiji at the Olympic Games, citing her faith as a source of strength.
Veronika, 13, shared her excitement about being the first in her family to win both a silver and a gold medal, as well as receiving a scholarship. She expressed her father’s joy and support for her athletic pursuits.
Inoke Biaunisala, the head teacher of Vudibasoga Catholic School, sounded optimistic about the future, noting that last year, one female student received a similar opportunity, and now two students are set for studies in Suva. He emphasized the school’s commitment to preparing more students for future competitions.
This success story not only highlights the achievements of two young athletes but also illustrates how dedication, support from educators, and family encouragement can create pathways to greater opportunities. The enthusiasm and aspirations of Repeka and Veronika serve as an inspiration for other students aiming for excellence in both academics and sports.
Their success reflects a promising future for Fiji’s youth in athletics, promoting a spirit of determination and hope for upcoming generations.
