Local Writer Wins Prestigious National Award After 25 Years of Advocacy

Donald Singh from Nadroga has been honored with The Fiji Times’ Letter of the Year 2024 award, recognizing his dedication to civic engagement through 25 years of contributions to the publication’s Letters to the Editor section. Singh emphasized the importance of expressing opinions on national issues, noting that citizen journalism plays a crucial role in areas where mainstream media may fall short.

He stated, “We are citizen journalists… it would be a tragedy if we are not able to express our views.” This notion illustrates a deep commitment among the citizens of Fiji to contribute to national discourse, reflecting a growing trend of community involvement in pressing societal matters.

Having previously won this accolade, Singh is motivated to continue his writing journey, seeing the award as “a bonus” that inspires him and others to advocate for national growth through informed dialogue. He encourages all individuals to share their perspectives on significant issues, particularly on topics that affect the nation. “Everyone should write, just pick one important matter, understand it, and then write,” he suggests, reinforcing the idea that citizen contributions can indeed influence decision-makers.

Singh’s recognition highlights not only his personal achievements but also the broader civic participation that is becoming increasingly vital in Fiji. As echoed in recent letters to the editor, there is a vibrant public dialogue addressing various topics, from political accountability to community welfare, demonstrating the power of collective voices in driving change.

Overall, this award serves as a reminder of the impact that engaged citizens can have on their governance and society, fostering a culture of transparency and accountability. It signifies hope for a future marked by continued participation and progress, paving the way for constructive dialogue and reform within the nation.
