The St Teresa Naba team recently competed in the Fiji Bitter Wairiki 7s tournament in Taveuni, showcasing their dedication despite lacking external sponsorship. Team manager Sefanaia Vakaloloma shared that the team’s journey began with fundraising efforts from the Lavena Village community, as they sought to create a new team to represent their vanua.
Vakaloloma explained that the formation of this team came after a period without one, emphasizing the importance of their local support. He noted, “We decided to do fundraising and from there that’s how we came into the tournament and there was no sponsor to help get us here.”
As the team prepared for the tournament, they welcomed many first-time players, indicating a spirit of inclusivity and growth within the squad. While their path in the competition fluctuated, the support of family and the larger vanua community has been a motivational backbone for the players.
Throughout the tournament, their performance varied: they won their opening match against Davetalevu by default, encountered a narrow defeat against Supercool Vatukoro with a score of 7-12, drew with Naselesele with no points scored, and concluded with a hard-fought victory over Sausauvou Taveuni, winning 14-12.
This journey, driven by local fundraising and community support, exemplifies the power of grassroots initiatives in sports. The St Teresa Naba team’s story not only highlights their commitment but also demonstrates the importance of local unity in achieving collective goals.
In summary, the St Teresa Naba team has shown incredible resilience and teamwork, inspiring others in their community through sports despite financial challenges. Their journey is a testament to the spirit of perseverance and dedication, embodying hope and determination for future endeavors.
