Jai Narayan College’s Peni Bulikiobo has made history by securing the school’s first gold medal in the Senior Boys 1500 meters at the Coca-Cola Games, held recently. The 19-year-old athlete from Lavena Village in Taveuni expressed his overwhelming joy upon receiving the gold medal, particularly after a past technicality led to a disqualification in a previous championship.
“I cried tears of joy when I was told that I had won the gold medal; I really thought I had missed out,” Bulikiobo said. This victory marks the second consecutive year that Bulikiobo has achieved this prestigious accolade, a feat that was confirmed after thorough review processes dismissed a protest against his competitor’s finish.
Reflecting on his achievement, Bulikiobo stated that this win has reinvigorated his enthusiasm leading up to his final event, the Senior Boys 3000 meters. He mentioned, “Winning this gold medal has definitely boosted me; I will rest now and prepare myself for the 3000 meters.”
Bulikiobo’s competitive spirit is evident, having honed his skills through participation in the World Cross Country Marathon in Serbia, where he gained invaluable experience racing alongside elite runners from countries renowned for their long-distance performance, such as Kenya and Uganda. His ambition to represent Fiji in long-distance running showcases the determination seen among young Fijian athletes.
The silver medal in the event went to Veresa Valemei from Nakasi High School, with Savenaca Namokoli of Natabua High School claiming bronze. The camaraderie and fierce competition among these young talents reflect a vibrant athletic culture in Fiji, one that is nurturing future stars and inspiring a sense of pride within their communities.
As the Coca-Cola Games continue to unfold, there is palpable excitement and hope for the future of sports in Fiji, underscoring the potential of these young athletes to excel on both local and international stages.
