Sanaila Duono, a 26-year-old athlete from Nalidi, Ra, has his sights set on representing Fiji in national sevens rugby, emphasizing that there is no age restriction on wearing the national colors. He participated in the Tier Two division of the R.C Manubhai Nataleira 7s tournament at Ratu Cakobau Park in Nausori, where he highlighted the importance of local competitions in providing opportunities for rural teams.
Duono noted that his team consists of players from various regions including Naitaisiri and Dawasamu, showing a commitment to inclusivity as they aim to represent all 14 provinces. He expressed gratitude for the support received from stakeholders, which has been crucial for the team’s logistics during the tournament.
Although PWD Bure faced a setback in their first match against Gau Kacau, losing 7-19, Duono remains optimistic. He stated that the team is focused on refining their communication and discipline in future matches and is determined to showcase their talents. His personal journey, marked by past injuries, serves as motivation as he looks to improve his fitness and readiness for upcoming challenges.
Duono also finds inspiration from former national sevens player Iliesa Nadai, which fuels his ambition to not only excel personally but also encourage his teammates to aim for the national squad.
This perspective embodies hope and determination, illustrating how individuals can rise from local competitions and potentially reach the national stage, exemplifying the boundless opportunities present in sports.
