A local pest control company, Fiji Chemical PTE Limited, is taking significant steps to assist the Ministry of Women, Children, and Social Protection in tackling a severe termite infestation in state-run care facilities. The company has generously donated 100 baiting systems, marking the start of installations at the Loloma Home in Lautoka, which has been notably affected by the pests.
The situation at the home has become dire, with termite populations spreading from deteriorating tree trunks into playgrounds and the building itself. Darran Bentley Fisher, the Managing Director of Fiji Chemical, explained that his company’s baiting system is a long-lasting solution, designed to remain effective for up to five years. This system includes both a perimeter defense and a damage control system, which will kill the termites currently damaging the structure.
The Women’s Ministry has requested further assessments of its properties to ensure comprehensive termite management, which echoes the broader governmental efforts as seen in similar initiatives throughout Fiji. Notably, a recent expansion of a nationwide termite baiting program aims to protect homes, particularly in lower-income areas, and has been supported by a substantial investment of $3.8 million dedicated to rehabilitating damages across multiple regions.
This proactive collaboration between Fiji Chemical and the Ministry not only seeks to eliminate the current infestation but also highlights the commitment to improving safety and living conditions for vulnerable populations. With effective pest management and community involvement, there is a hopeful expectation that these initiatives will significantly mitigate the termite threat in Fiji, paving the way for safer environments for all residents.
