Fiji has taken a significant step forward in healthcare by introducing local heart bypass surgeries at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH), where patients can save over $25,000 compared to overseas treatments. This new option aims to provide advanced cardiac care closer to home, sparing residents from the high costs of traveling abroad for surgery.

Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old resident from Lautoka, was the first patient to undergo open-heart surgery at PSH, successfully completing a four-hour operation on Monday. Previously referred to seek surgery in India by Aspen Hospital, Ms. Lata was confronted with a bill of around FJ$54,000. However, she was relieved to find the same procedure at PSH for much less, making healthcare more accessible.

Parvish Kumar, the founder and CEO of PSH, views this groundbreaking development as a pivotal moment in the evolution of healthcare within Fiji and the Pacific region. He stated that this endeavor exemplifies the commitment and skill of their surgical team, allowing patients to receive world-class cardiac treatment at home, surrounded by family, and at significantly reduced prices.

The surgical team at PSH includes members trained in prestigious international healthcare institutions, ensuring that high standards of clinical excellence are upheld. Mr. Kumar remarked that the first open-heart surgery in Fiji was the result of 15 months of meticulous planning, investment in state-of-the-art technology, and teamwork among medical professionals.

He referred to the success of this initiative as a “beacon of hope” for cardiac patients across the Pacific. PSH is committed to achieving a 100 percent success rate through stringent pre- and post-operative protocols, integrating Fijian nurses as integral parts of the surgical success process. Mr. Kumar expressed his pride in the nurses, highlighting their critical role in providing thorough care during the surgery.

This initiative represents a promising advancement in healthcare for Fiji and the broader Pacific community, enhancing access to critical medical procedures and reducing financial burdens on families. By focusing on local healthcare solutions, Fiji can empower its citizens and foster a healthier population moving forward.
