Fijians requiring heart bypass surgeries can now gather significant savings by choosing local procedures at Pacific Specialist Healthcare (PSH), which has recently initiated these services in Fiji. This development brings sophisticated cardiac care closer to home, negating the expensive necessity for overseas travel.

Kusum Lata, a 56-year-old from Lautoka, became the first patient to undergo open-heart surgery at PSH, successfully completing a four-hour operation on Monday. Earlier, she was advised by Lautoka’s Aspen Hospital to travel to India for surgery, incurring costs of approximately FJ$54,000. Fortunately, she found the procedure at PSH for less than a quarter of that amount.

According to Parvish Kumar, the founder and chief executive officer of PSH, the introduction of in-country cardiac surgeries signifies a groundbreaking advancement in healthcare for Fiji and the broader Pacific region. “This achievement reflects the dedication and expertise of our surgical team,” Mr. Kumar stated, emphasizing the importance of allowing patients to receive exceptional cardiac care at home, surrounded by family, and at considerably reduced costs.

PSH boasts a skilled surgical team trained in leading international healthcare institutions that uphold rigorous clinical excellence. Mr. Kumar noted that Fiji’s first open-heart surgery indicates 15 months of careful planning, investment in advanced technology, and collaboration among medical teams.

He described this initiative as a “beacon of hope” for cardiac patients throughout the Pacific. With thorough pre- and post-operative protocols, PSH aims to achieve a 100 percent success rate, integrating Fijian nurses as essential participants in the surgical success. “Our Fijian nurses performed excellently, providing comprehensive care throughout the surgical process,” expressed Mr. Kumar, who takes pride in the hospital’s pivotal role in enhancing cardiac healthcare accessibility.

This initiative not only reflects advancements in healthcare technology and practice but also demonstrates a commitment to improving local healthcare options for all Fijians, offering hope for a healthier future in the region.

Overall, this new service is a positive step toward self-sufficiency in healthcare and represents a tremendous financial relief for patients and their families who no longer need to shoulder the burden of exorbitant treatment costs abroad.
