The local government ministry’s compliance team is set to visit 13 municipal councils to address and resolve various audit qualification issues, as announced by director Bindula Devi. This initiative follows the presentation of the Nausori Town Council’s annual reports for 2016-2018 on Wednesday, which raised concerns about financial oversight.
During the meeting, Standing Committee on Social Affairs member Ioane Naivalurua inquired about any individuals implicated in fund misappropriation or corrupt practices, and whether these cases had been referred to the appropriate authorities. In response, Ms. Devi explained that a clear timeline for rectification will be established, as the compliance team will base their actions on findings from the Office of the Auditor General.
Devi emphasized that these are ongoing challenges, noting that they are aware of significant issues not only within town councils but across various councils. The team is committed to implementing necessary actions to rectify these problems and prevent recurrence in the future.
Local Government principal audit and compliance officer Saidi Nazrana further highlighted that the council has already reported existing cases of fund misappropriation to the Fiji Independent Commission Against Corruption (FICAC).
This proactive approach by the local government ministry demonstrates a commitment to transparency and accountability in council operations. By addressing these longstanding issues, there is hope for improved governance and restored public trust in the councils, ultimately benefiting the communities they serve.
