A businessman from Labasa has taken the initiative to construct a bypass road in the town, addressing a long-standing issue of traffic congestion that has been discussed for years. The idea for the bypass was initially put forth by the Government, but progress had stalled despite multiple announcements. This lack of action prompted Edwin Chand to invest in the project personally.

While Chand did not disclose the project’s cost, he has begun preliminary work, and the construction is expected to be completed within a few months. The bypass will be situated next to Chand’s ongoing development of an industrial zone at Vakamaisuasua.

Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Trade, Manoa Kamikamica, who was informed about the project, expressed optimism about its benefits for Labasa. He highlighted this initiative as an example of good governance, where private individuals invest in the country’s development and contribute to boosting the economy.

With increasing investments in the North, there is a sense of anticipation that the local economy will see significant transformation in the coming years. Chand’s decision to fund the bypass demonstrates a commitment to improving infrastructure and supporting economic growth in the region.

This project reflects the positive impact that individual actions can have on community development and infrastructure, encouraging other local investors to take similar initiatives in the future.
