The vibrant streets of Labasa Town came alive recently as the Washington Tin Band delivered a spirited performance, marking a delightful moment in the community following the cancellation of the New Year’s street party in the Northern Division. Originating from Lami Village in Suva, this 13-member band captivated audiences with cheerful melodies produced using empty drums, tins, sticks, and other containers, entertaining passersby outside Dutt’s Shoe World and Chinatown Shops.

Band leader Mosese Ravadra shared that their performance tour began earlier in the week in Bua, with plans to spend several days in Labasa visiting local villages before heading to Savusavu and Taveuni by week’s end. “The purpose of our tour is to wish everyone a happy New Year through our music,” he stated, noting this marks the second consecutive year the band has traveled from Viti Levu to Vanua Levu to spread festive cheer during the New Year celebrations.

During their lively performances, the band encourages spectators to contribute, with a collection tin placed among the musicians and a dancer. Ravadra explained that the proceeds will support the band members, particularly students, with their back-to-school expenses. “There’s no fixed amount; whatever the generous people of the friendly North bless us with will be used for our children, who have dedicated their time to perform during this tour,” he emphasized.

Moreover, Ravadra mentioned that a younger group of band members is performing on the streets of Suva, ensuring that the New Year spirit reaches wider audiences. “Our goal is to include everyone in this celebration and bring joy wherever we go,” he added.
