Extra Supermarket Labasa FC secured a 3-1 victory over Flick Hygiene Suva FC in a Group A match of the Super Premier Division at the FMF IDC 2024, held at Churchill Park in Lautoka yesterday.
Despite heavy rain, both teams showcased quality football with effective passing throughout the game. In the first half, Labasa’s chances were thwarted by Suva’s goalkeeper, Akuila Mateisuva, who made crucial saves from a corner kick and a direct shot.
Suva took the lead in the 37th minute when Joeli Ranitu scored with a header from a corner. However, shortly after, Labasa was awarded a penalty when Suva’s Bruce Hughes fouled Lekima Gonerau in the box. Christopher Wasasala converted the penalty, equalizing the score at 1-1 before halftime.
In the second half, Labasa took control with a goal from Taniela Waqa, putting them ahead 2-1. Veteran goalkeeper Simione Tamanisau played a pivotal role for Labasa, blocking several attempts from Suva. Junior Fordney sealed the victory for Labasa with a goal in the final moments, concluding the match at 3-1.
Labasa’s coach, Ravneel Pratap, expressed his satisfaction with the win, emphasizing the importance of the opening match. He praised his team’s resilience, noting their strong mentality after recovering from a goal down.
Suva’s coach, Babs Khan, acknowledged that the match could have gone either way but lamented that his team missed several scoring opportunities. He stated that while Labasa capitalized on their chances, his side struggled to convert their own.
