Lilian Amazons Shine in LIT 7s Debut: A Promising Future for Fijian Women’s Rugby!

The Lilian Amazon Women’s 7s team made a noteworthy debut at the Women’s LIT 7s tournament in Shelford, narrowly missing out on the cup title with a 14-17 loss to the tournament favorites, Shogun. Despite the defeat, the Fijian team showcased impressive skill and determination, leaving a significant impact both on the field and back home in Fiji.

Head coach Tirani Uluinakauvadra expressed pride in the team’s performance and the progress they made during their first outing as a club. “This is the second of four tournaments in the series, and while we didn’t participate as Lilian in the first round, this was our first run as a club and we’re already looking forward to the next two rounds,” he stated. He also acknowledged the guidance of Solo Baleisolomoni, who has been instrumental in nurturing the team during their time in the UK.

The team faced stiff competition, going up against players with international experience from Great Britain, Wales, and Scotland, but they held their ground with tenacity. Uluinakauvadra remarked, “This is a huge step up for the girls, and it’s been a great learning experience to play against top-tier talent. The exposure is priceless.” The positive momentum from their performance has resonated back in Fiji, where interest in women’s rugby is rapidly growing, exemplified by more than 30 players eager to learn the sport.

This performance builds on the Lilian Amazons’ recent success in other competitions, including a win at the Fiji Sports Council Under-20 Sevens Rugby Tournament, where they defeated the Senikakala Amazons 12-5. The achievements and ambition of the Lilian Amazons highlight the potential for women’s rugby in Fiji, serving as an inspiration for future generations of female athletes. As they continue to develop and gain experience, the future of the sport looks promising.
