The Lilian Amazon team emerged victorious in the women’s category of the Fiji Sports Council Under-20 Sevens Rugby Tournament, defeating the Senikakala Amazons 12-5 in the final held at Thomson Park in Navua. Their journey to the championship was marked by impressive performances in both group and elimination matches throughout the one-day event.
Team coach Tihrani Uluinakauvadra expressed pride in the team’s achievement, stating their determination to become the premier women’s rugby team in Fiji. “We’ve changed our goal this year. We want to be the best in Fiji, and we want to acknowledge God’s work within the team,” Uluinakauvadra shared.
Before this tournament, the Lilian Amazons had already demonstrated their prowess by winning at notable events such as the Fiji Bitter Malake 7s, the Brimstone 7s against the Seahawks, and recording two victories at the Duavata 7s in New Zealand last month, which Uluinakauvadra labeled a clean sweep.
The focus of the tournament on under-20 athletes allowed for the integration of three senior players, while the rest of the squad comprised junior players who are part of the team’s development program. Uluinakauvadra praised the collective effort of the players and their stellar on-field performance.
Looking ahead, the coach emphasized the need for the team to stay proactive and focused. “We want to ensure that while we are dominating, we don’t want to split and make ourselves thin,” he remarked.
In addition to the championship title, the team also received prize money as a reward for their hard work and success.
This victory not only marks a significant achievement for the Lilian Amazons but also showcases the growing talent and potential of women’s rugby in Fiji. As the team aims for further success in upcoming competitions, their resilience and dedication shine as a promising beacon for the future of female rugby in the region.
