The Lilian Amazons have claimed victory in the women’s category of the Fiji Sports Council under-20 sevens rugby tournament, defeating the Senikakala Amazons with a score of 12-5. This achievement was announced after the conclusion of the first leg of the tournament held at Thomson Park in Navua.
The team advanced to the finals following a series of strong performances in both group and elimination matches throughout the one-day event. Tihrani Uluinakauvadra, the team’s coach, expressed pride in their victory and reiterated their ambition to become the top women’s rugby team in Fiji. “We’ve changed our goal this year. We want to be the best in Fiji, and we want to acknowledge God’s work within the team,” stated Uluinakauvadra.
Building on their previous successes at tournaments like the Fiji Bitter Malake 7s and the Brimstone 7s, where they defeated the Seahawks, the Lilian Amazons also secured two wins at the Duavata 7s in New Zealand last month. Uluinakauvadra regarded these victories as a significant accomplishment.
The tournament specifically focused on the U20 category, yet the Lilian Amazons included three senior players in their lineup, while the remainder of the team consisted of emerging talents from their development program. The coach praised the players for their exceptional performance throughout the tournament.
Looking ahead, Uluinakauvadra emphasized the importance of maintaining focus and not overextending as they prepare for future competitions. “We want to make sure that while we are dominating, we don’t want to split and make ourselves thin,” he said. In addition to their trophy, the team also received prize money, further motivating them for their upcoming challenges.
This triumph not only highlights the growing competitiveness of women’s rugby in Fiji but also serves as an inspiring example of dedication and teamwork. As the Lilian Amazons continue to refine their skills and strategies, they embody the spirit of progress in women’s sports, paving the way for future generations in rugby.
