The Lilian Amazon team has secured the title in the women’s category of the Fiji Sports Council under-20 sevens rugby tournament, emerging victorious over the Senikakala Amazons with a score of 12-5. This achievement was celebrated following the first leg of the tournament, which took place at Thomson Park in Navua.
The team made their way to the finals through impressive performances in both their group and knockout matches during the one-day event. Coach Tihrani Uluinakauvadra expressed his gratitude for their success and highlighted the team’s goal of becoming the premier women’s rugby side in Fiji.
“We’ve changed our goal this year. We want to be the best in Fiji, and we want to acknowledge God’s work within the team,” Uluinakauvadra stated. His comments reflect a strong commitment not only to competition but to values that unify the team.
The Lilian Amazons entered the tournament with significant momentum following triumphs at several prestigious events, including the Fiji Bitter Malake 7s, the Brimstone 7s, and two victories at the Duavata 7s in New Zealand last month. Uluinakauvadra noted these accomplishments as part of a “clean sweep,” showcasing the team’s consistency and competitive edge.
While the tournament was specifically focused on the U20 age group, Uluinakauvadra mentioned the beneficial inclusion of three senior players, with the majority being part of the team’s development program. He praised the players for their outstanding performances and teamwork displayed throughout the tournament.
As they look ahead to future competitions, the coach emphasized the importance of remaining proactive and cohesive as a team. “We want to make sure that while we are dominating, we don’t want to split and make ourselves thin,” he stressed.
In addition to their victory, the team also received prize money as a reward for their remarkable achievement, further bolstering their drive for excellence in women’s rugby.
This victory not only highlights the skill and determination of the Lilian Amazons but also serves as inspiration for the next generation of female athletes in Fiji, proving that with hard work and dedication, remarkable achievements are within reach.
