The Lilian Amazon team has emerged victorious in the women’s category of the Fiji Sports Council under-20 sevens rugby tournament, securing a win against Senikakala Amazons with a score of 12-5. The final match took place at Thomson Park in Navua, marking the conclusion of the tournament’s first leg.
The team demonstrated a strong performance throughout the competition, successfully navigating both group and elimination matches. Coach Tihrani Uluinakauvadra expressed pride in the team’s accomplishments and highlighted their ambition to be recognized as the top women’s rugby side in Fiji. “We’ve changed our goal this year. We want to be the best in Fiji, and we want to acknowledge God’s work within the team,” Uluinakauvadra stated.
The Lilian Amazons entered the tournament after achieving notable success at previous events, including the Fiji Bitter Malake 7s, the Brimstone 7s where they triumphed over the Seahawks, and two wins at the Duavata 7s in New Zealand last month, which Uluinakauvadra referred to as a clean sweep.
Emphasizing the importance of youth development, the winning coach noted the inclusion of three senior players in the squad, while the majority of the team comprised players participating in the team’s developmental program. Uluinakauvadra commended their collaborative efforts, which contributed to their impressive display on the field.
As the team looks ahead to future competitions, the coach reiterated the necessity of maintaining a proactive approach. “We want to make sure that while we are dominating, we don’t want to split and make ourselves thin,” he stressed. With their championship victory, the team also received prize money, adding to their success and motivation for the coming season.
This win serves not only as a testament to the hard work and dedication of the Lilian Amazons but also as an inspiration for young female athletes across Fiji, showcasing the potential for growth and excellence in women’s rugby.
