Energy Fiji Limited has reported that a lightning strike resulted in power outages this morning starting at 6:00 AM. Bobby Naimawi, the Chief Operating Officer, explained that the lightning impacted the 132,000-volt transmission lines between Wailoa to Cunningham Road in Suva and Wailoa to Vuda in Lautoka. This interruption isolated electricity supply to several areas in the Central and Western Divisions of Viti Levu.
Fortunately, Naimawi noted that the team was quick to respond, successfully reenergizing the main transmission line and restoring power to all affected areas by 8:30 AM. He mentioned that there was intense thunder and lightning activity in Monasavu and confirmed that the disruption stemmed directly from a lightning strike on the transmission infrastructure.
Despite the inconvenience caused to residents, the prompt action taken by Energy Fiji Limited’s teams illustrates their commitment to maintaining service continuity and quickly addressing logistical challenges that arise from unpredictable weather events.
This incident highlights the importance of infrastructure resiliency in regions prone to severe weather. The situation serves as a reminder of the critical role of utility companies in ensuring reliable energy supply and their ability to respond effectively during emergencies. Overall, swift recovery efforts can foster public trust and showcase the benefits of robust disaster management protocols.
