During the celebration of Diwali, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Finance, Professor Biman Prasad, emphasized the need for fostering the ideals of truth, justice, and righteousness to strengthen Fiji’s future. In his message, he reflected on the importance of recognizing the freedoms and rights restored by the Coalition Government following the elections in December 2022.
Professor Prasad drew parallels between the lessons from the Hindu festival of Diwali and the current political landscape. He noted that just as Lord Ram practiced righteousness after overcoming evil, the Coalition Government aims to uphold these fundamental freedoms. He stressed that the essence of Diwali should permeate everyday life, serving as a reminder of the values of honesty, transparency, and accountability in governance.
Citing the 14-year exile of Lord Ram, he explained the significance of his return to establish Ram Rajya, a reign characterized by integrity and the wellbeing of all citizens. Professor Prasad acknowledged the Coalition Government’s journey in resetting the moral compass of the nation after years of dictatorship, recognizing that they faced similar challenges in realizing a stable and prosperous society.
He highlighted the diyas, which symbolize hope, peace, and glory, as a guiding light in achieving meaningful solutions that prioritize the lives of people. Stating that self-interest should be set aside for long-term solutions, he reaffirmed the government’s commitment to engaging in dialogue and consensus-building as a way to foster lasting progress.
In summary, Professor Prasad’s message underscores a hopeful and constructive vision for Fiji’s future, rooted in the timeless teachings of Lord Ram, which advocates for selflessness and collective advancement.
This Diwali, the call for unity and moral responsibility resonates, encouraging both leaders and citizens to work towards a brighter, more inclusive future for all Fijians.
