The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has provided an update regarding the replacement of the non-functional lift at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital (CWMH). A new lift is slated to arrive next month, which will help alleviate the ongoing issues that have affected patient care at the facility.

In recent weeks, the public expressed their concerns on social media about the lift’s prolonged unserviceability. The ministry acknowledged these frustrations in an official statement, confirming that the lift, located in the West Wing, has been out of operation for an extended period. This situation has caused considerable disruptions in patient care.

The outdated lift, which has been in use for over 15 years, was originally sourced from OTIS Elevator Company in New Zealand. Engineers from the company are currently on-site to restore its functionality while the Ministry works in collaboration with various agencies, including the Ministry of Public Works, Transport and Meteorological Services, to tackle the issue effectively.

Recognizing the need for modernization, the Ministry embarked on a procurement process in 2023 to replace not only the malfunctioning lift but also all aging lifts at CWMH. The newly designed lifts are expected to arrive in February 2025 and are essential for transporting patients, staff, and medical equipment like beds and wheelchairs. These lifts will also adhere to stringent infection control standards, necessitating careful planning for their procurement and installation.

The Ministry remains committed to addressing the frustrations caused by the lift’s failure and is actively enhancing healthcare infrastructure throughout the country. They are urging patients, their families, and staff to exercise patience as these improvements are implemented, emphasizing their dedication to enhancing healthcare delivery.

This modernization effort reflects a commitment to improving healthcare services and ensuring better outcomes for patients in the future. While challenges remain, the proactive approach taken by the Ministry shows a hopeful direction towards improved patient care.
