The High Court in Lautoka has sentenced Semesa Bokini to life in prison after he was found guilty of aggravated robbery, attempted rape, and murder. Bokini must serve at least 16 years before becoming eligible for parole.
The court proceedings revealed that on January 5, 2019, Bokini, wielding a piece of timber, robbed a couple of four mobile phones worth $3,500 in Korovou, Tavua. The victims included Mohammed Shafique and a woman, whose identity has been kept confidential.
During the incident, Bokini attempted to sexually assault the woman without her consent and subsequently killed Shafique. The prosecution presented 15 witnesses throughout the trial, along with various pieces of evidence.
In delivering the sentence, Justice Riyaz Hamza emphasized that it was clear Bokini had used force against the victims and had the intent to harm, specifically stating the factual basis for the charges. Justice Hamza
