Salimoni Lagicere and Edward Nand have both been sentenced to life imprisonment by the High Court in Suva for the murder of Narend Chand, a Fiji-born Canadian. The court ruled that Lagicere must serve at least 16 years and Nand a minimum of 18 years before they are eligible for parole.

During the sentencing on October 20, Judge Sianiu Fa’alogo Bull highlighted the systematic and horrific nature of the crime, which took place on February 19, 2023. Evidence presented in court revealed that the two men deceived Chand into believing he was meeting a woman he had connected with online, a ruse orchestrated by Nand. After arriving in Fiji, Chand was met with a fatal attack, strangled with an electric cord purchased by Nand, and his body was later disposed of in the Waimaro River.

Justice Bull reflected on the gravity of the incident, affirming that the murder was both deliberate and premeditated, despite the defendants lacking previous violent convictions, although there were unproven allegations against Nand.

This notorious case not only raises awareness about the perils associated with online interactions but also emphasizes the critical need for public education regarding the dangers of digital relationships. As the legal verdict is pronounced, it is hoped that the pursuit of justice for Narend Chand fosters greater awareness about safety in online communications.

Additionally, this situation serves as a vital reminder for individuals to be vigilant when engaging with others through social media, further illustrating the severe consequences that can arise from deceit in the digital realm and the inherent necessity for caution in all online dealings.
