Anticipation is mounting for the 2025 Fiji Secondary Schools Hockey tournament, set to unfold at Nasau Park in Levuka, Ovalau, from August 19 to August 23. The four-day event will bring together 13 participating schools for a showcase of skill, teamwork, and competitive spirit.

After years apart, Delana Methodist High School and Ballantine Memorial have returned to the lineup, joining two new entrants, Sila Secondary School and Dilkusha Methodist High School, as announced by Immanuel Prasad, president of the Fiji Secondary Schools Hockey Association (FSSHA). The tournament aims to promote sportsmanship, teamwork, and physical fitness while strengthening community spirit and delivering entertainment for hockey fans across the islands.

“This tournament not only helps players sharpen their skills and compete at various levels,” Prasad noted, “but it also opens pathways for selectors from the Fiji Hockey Federation to scout talent for national development teams and international competitions, fostering the growth and popularity of hockey in Fiji.”

Prasad also expressed gratitude for the sponsors’ dedication to youth sports development in Fiji. The FSSHA has formed naming rights partnerships with Venu Haulage Shipping Ltd Fiji and Outback Range Pte Ltd, a collaboration he described as a powerful boost for young athletes and for promoting hockey throughout Fiji. The sponsors’ Levuka roots add a meaningful local dimension to the event.

Competition will feature top prize categories across age groups, including the under-16 boys Noal Cup, the under-16 girls Melaia Sandys Cup, the under-19 girls Westmere Cup, and the under-19 boys Bhasin Cup. In addition, the Inter-District tournament will showcase the John May Cup and the Sophia Raddock Cup, underscoring the tournament’s broad appeal and competitive depth.

The 2025 event follows the 2024 tournament, which was held at Suva’s National Hockey Centre, marking a continued tradition of Fiji’s secondary-school hockey showcase. Hosting the tournament in Levuka offers a local touch that can energize the community, boost participation at the grassroots level, and highlight Levuka’s role in Fiji’s hockey development.

A positive outlook is common among organizers and coaches, who see this event as a platform to nurture talent, build lasting friendships, and strengthen Fiji’s hockey ecosystem. For fans and families, it promises four days of exciting youth hockey and the chance to witness future national players in the making.

In short, the 2025 Fiji Secondary Schools Hockey tournament is positioned as a milestone in Fiji’s youth-sports landscape, with local sponsorship, new participating schools, and a clear pathway for young athletes to aspire to higher levels of competition. The Levuka-hosted event aims to leave a lasting positive impact on players, communities, and the sport’s growth across the islands.
