Levuka Public School achieved an impressive milestone by establishing its first brass band, which made its debut at the annual cadet passing-out parade held at Nasau Park on Friday. The band was formed in a mere two months through a concerted effort to enhance school spirit and introduce a musical tradition, a statement made by Principal Seru Banuve highlights.
With no existing school song or band previously, the initiative was a noteworthy endeavor. “We wanted to do something different,” Mr. Banuve stated, reflecting on the school’s history and lack of musical traditions. To kickstart the band, a skilled multi-instrumentalist instructor was brought on board, supported by a group of seven retired military band officers, whose invaluable experience proved vital.
Mr. Banuve expressed gratitude for the support, emphasizing that age or mobility challenges do not diminish the wisdom and skills these veterans bring. The band had its first performance during the well-known Coca-Cola Games, with aspirations to expand the music program further, potentially developing music as a vocational option for students. “If we have carpentry and automotive, why not music?” he posed, indicating the broader educational possibilities music could offer.
Such initiatives not only aim to enrich students’ educational experiences but also open doors for future opportunities in fields like the navy, military, police, and beyond, presenting a viable market for interested students. This encouragement of creativity and expression in schools echoes similar initiatives noted at Nabala Secondary School, which recently upgraded its music program significantly with community support, indicating a growing recognition of music education’s importance in developing well-rounded students.
Overall, Levuka Public School’s efforts signify a positive movement towards enriching the educational landscape through music, thereby nurturing talent and fostering community spirit.
