Bayer Leverkusen began their Champions League journey with an impressive 4-0 victory against Feyenoord in Rotterdam. The German side dominated the first half, with Florian Wirtz scoring two goals, Alejandro Grimaldo adding another, and an own goal contributing to the scoreline before halftime.
Feyenoord, who finished as runners-up in the Dutch league last season, faced a disappointing start to their campaign, particularly after the departure of coach Arne Slot to Liverpool, leaving them struggling for form.
Leverkusen took the lead within the first five minutes when Wirtz capitalized on a defensive error by Ramiz Zerrouki. Dutch international Jeremie Frimpong then played a crucial role, setting up Grimaldo with a clever assist followed by a precise cross for Wirtz’s second goal. Just before halftime, an own goal by Feyenoord goalkeeper Timon Wellenreuther after a header from Edmond Tapsoba sealed a dismal first half for the home team.
In the second half, Feyenoord captain Quinten Timber had a chance to score but was thwarted by Leverkusen keeper Lukas Hradecky. Although Feyenoord displayed more energy after the break, they struggled to create significant scoring opportunities, with a late effort from substitute Ayase Ueda ruled out for offside.
Leverkusen nearly added a fifth goal in stoppage time, but David Hancko cleared an attempt from Aleix Garcia off the line. Looking ahead, Leverkusen will face AC Milan at home on October 1, with Feyenoord traveling to Girona the following day.
