Online Victims’ experiences serve as a stark reminder that while digital communication is integral to modern life, it should never compromise personal safety and dignity. Lynda Tabuya, the former Minister for Women, publicly shared her traumatic experience for the first time since her dismissal from cabinet, which followed the non-consensual sharing of a nude video of her online.
Speaking at the “Safer Internet Day” celebrations in Suva, Tabuya expressed her hope for a future where the internet is safe. She reflected on the distress caused by the unauthorized distribution of her private moments, underscoring that the intention behind such actions is often to humiliate and damage reputations. She noted, “Without my consent, my private moment was publicly displayed, aiming to defame me and undermine the trust of those who voted for me.”
Tabuya emphasized the need to distinguish between freedom of expression and the necessity of consent, declaring that the non-consensual sharing of intimate videos is a clear violation of privacy and illegal. She stated unequivocally, “The law is objective… unauthorized sharing of intimate videos is a crime.”
In light of these concerns, Commissioner Filipe Batiwale of the Online Safety Commission revealed plans to strengthen measures against cyberbullying and enhance the commission’s enforcement powers. He highlighted the importance of fostering a culture of respect and responsibility in the digital space, stating, “Online safety is not just about rules but about engaging with Fijians of all ages to navigate the digital world safely.”
With growing concerns surrounding cybercrime and bullying, the Online Safety Commission is working collaboratively with the Fiji Police Force Cyber Crime Unit and other relevant authorities to address these issues and ensure that those who engage in cyberbullying are held accountable.
This emphasis on digital safety is increasingly vital in our interconnected world, and Tabuya’s experience illustrates the urgent need for legislative and societal change to protect individuals in the digital age. Promoting awareness and education on online safety not only empowers individuals but also cultivates a community that champions respect and dignity online.
Overall, Safer Internet Day serves as an important platform to reflect on digital conduct and advocate for a safe online environment for everyone.
