The investigation into the death of a man in custody at the Savusavu Police Station on November 5 is expected to yield essential insights for the Fiji Police Force. Pio Tikoduadua, the Minister for Home Affairs and Immigration, made this observation during his recent visit to Labasa, emphasizing that such incidents should not occur.
Mr. Tikoduadua highlighted the importance of prioritizing the welfare and well-being of individuals in custody. He acknowledged that the situation is exacerbated by infrastructure issues, calling for the development of improved facilities. Additionally, he noted concerns about the mental health of detainees and emphasized the need for enhanced education and awareness among police officers regarding these issues.
“I am not blaming the police, as these environments can be challenging. However, it is crucial that we ensure detainees are placed in safe and secure surroundings,” he stated. He also pointed out the necessity for specialized training so that personnel can appropriately identify individuals who might require additional support.
The ongoing investigation follows the tragic case of Marika Radua, a farmer from Naviavia Settlement in Cakaudrove, who was reportedly assaulted by another detainee. Officers promptly transported him to Savusavu Sub-divisional Hospital, where he was sadly pronounced dead upon arrival.
This incident provides an opportunity for the Fiji Police Force to learn and improve their approaches to handling mental health issues among detainees and to enhance the safety protocols within police facilities. With the focus on improving conditions and training, there is hope that such tragic occurrences can be prevented in the future. By prioritizing the welfare of those in custody and adapting their operations, the police can take meaningful steps towards fostering a safer and more humane environment.
