The Ministry of Health and Medical Services has issued a public health advisory urging individuals to avoid entering the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park and refraining from swimming in forest pools due to an increased risk of leptospirosis. This warning comes in light of recent leptospirosis cases, including one confirmed death in Suva.
While the Ministry has not confirmed a direct link between the recent fatality and activities in the Colo-i-Suva Forest Park, they have acknowledged one death from the disease and reported two additional suspected cases currently being investigated at the Colonial War Memorial Hospital.
Health officials have raised concerns that contaminated waters may pose a serious health risk, particularly after heavy rainfall, which can lead to unsafe conditions for recreational use. The public is encouraged to remain vigilant for symptoms of leptospirosis, such as fever, headache, muscle pain, red eyes, vomiting, and jaundice.
Those experiencing any signs of illness are strongly urged to seek early screening and treatment at their nearest health facility, as timely diagnosis can be critical for effective management of the disease. The Ministry is actively monitoring the situation and is committed to keeping the public informed on developments regarding this health concern.
