Veteran boxing trainer Lepani Wilson has urged the Boxing Commission of Fiji (BCF) to refrain from making public statements while the investigation into the tragic death of Ubayd Haider is still ongoing. His remarks follow a recent press conference held by BCF chairman Adi Narayan and board member Eroni Loganimoce, during which they discussed the suspension of South Pacific Boxing Promotions (SPBP) license, citing promoter Fred Chand’s controversies on social media as a contributing factor.

Wilson expressed his concern that these discussions are disrespectful to Haider’s family, who are currently mourning their loss. “This is a serious issue where life matters. In a situation like this, maturity should prevail,” he asserted. Drawing from his own experience in the 1990s following the death of boxer Filimoni Takayawa, Wilson emphasized the importance of collaboration among boxing bodies, promoters, and legal representatives to enhance safety measures for boxers.

He stressed that assigning blame is not constructive, as multiple stakeholders share responsibility when processes are not adhered to. “Now, it’s essential to enforce existing regulations and introduce additional measures to safeguard the lives of athletes,” he concluded.

In the midst of a challenging time for the boxing community, Wilson’s call for unity and respect highlights a path forward that prioritizes the well-being of all involved in the sport. His perspective serves as a reminder of the collective effort needed to ensure the safety of boxers in the future, turning a moment of tragedy into an opportunity for improvement and stronger governance in the sport.
