Leone Nawai made a remarkable return to the Swire Shipping Fijian Drua, stepping up as a scrumhalf in their 28-14 victory over the NSW Waratahs at Churchill Park. This match marked a significant milestone for Nawai, as it was not only his debut against an Australian team but also his first time playing in front of his home crowd, adding emotional significance to the triumph.

Originally from Narewa, Nadi, Nawai expressed pride in his performance and the unity exhibited by the team. “We talked throughout the week and told each other to put our bodies on the line. I’m happy we showed that in Lautoka,” he stated, highlighting the team’s effort and resolve.

Having previously played with the Drua in 2022 but limited to playing time due to a strong lineup, Nawai took his game to New Zealand where he achieved success with the Taranaki Bulls in the Bunnings NPC before earning a call to return as injury cover for the sidelined Frank Lomani.

Nawai reflected on his journey, stating, “When I finished my contract in 2022, I didn’t give up. I signed with Taranaki, learned a lot, and was surprised when I got the call to cover for Frank.” His experience abroad has contributed to his skill development, and he is now part of a competitive halfback rotation that includes Simione Kuruvoli and Phillip Baselala.

Looking ahead, Nawai and the Drua face another crucial match against Moana Pasifika, and he emphasized the importance of not getting ahead of themselves. “We’ll take things step by step,” he affirmed, as the team aims for a strong finish to the season while keeping their aspirations for a top-six finish alive.

Nawai’s journey, characterized by perseverance and growth, embodies the spirit of ambition within Fijian rugby. The support from fans and the community has renewed hope, not just for Nawai personally but for the entire Drua squad, as they look to build momentum and continue their quest for success in the Super Rugby Pacific tournament.
