Lelean’s U17 Rugby Team Survives Nail-Biter to Reach Semis!

The Lelean Memorial School under-17 rugby league team has advanced to the semi-finals of the South East Zone Fiji Secondary Schools Rugby League following a narrow 18-13 win over Namosi Secondary School in the quarter-finals. This match, held at the St. Marceline primary school grounds, marked a significant achievement as Lelean is the only team from the school progressing in their respective categories, with the U15 and U19 teams unfortunately being eliminated.

Coach Joe Savou acknowledged the unexpected challenge posed by Namosi, despite Lelean’s impressive track record of victories with margins exceeding 40 points in previous games. “Today, Namosi really tested us,” Savou remarked, recognizing that the match served as a wake-up call for the players. He expressed concerns regarding the team’s discipline and preparation, noting that a lax attitude and limited training during the week nearly cost them the game.

Savou stressed the importance of refocusing and preparing adequately for the upcoming semifinal clash scheduled for next Saturday. “The boys need to understand that the competition gets tougher from here,” he emphasized.

In a related context, the competitive spirit among various school teams, such as Naitasiri Secondary School’s under-17 squad, which is also focusing on discipline as they prepare for their quarter-finals, highlights a broader theme in Fiji’s secondary school rugby league. Coaches across teams report that maintaining discipline and rigorous training are key components to success.

This ongoing tournament not only showcases the talent of young athletes but also fortifies community ties and inspires positive growth in sportsmanship among students. With enthusiasm building for future matches, the journey of teams like Lelean is a testament to the potential of youth rugby in Fiji, offering hope for continued success and increased recognition for emerging talents in the sport.
