Leigh Halfpenny, the former Wales full-back, has officially signed a new contract with Cardiff and is poised to make his return this weekend. The 36-year-old had initially joined the team at the start of the season on a short-term basis as a kicking coach, with plans to transition back into playing once he fully recovered from a calf injury.
Approaching his 37th birthday just before Christmas, Halfpenny has now solidified his role at the Arms Park as a player-coach. He is fit for selection and ready to be part of Cardiff’s Challenge Cup home match against Ulster this Saturday at 20:00 GMT. If chosen to play, it will mark his first appearance for Cardiff in over 11 years, with a staggering 4,347 days having passed since he last donned the Blue and Blacks in 2014 before moving to Toulon.
Cardiff Rugby coach Corniel van Zyl expressed his enthusiasm, stating, “We are blessed to have some quality full-backs at the club, but to add Leigh’s experience to the mix is brilliant.” This sentiment highlights the invaluable experience and leadership that Halfpenny brings to the team, suggesting a promising return for both the player and the club.
