The National Taskforce to Address Pornography held its second meeting this week, focusing on the urgent need to prohibit access to pornography for children aged 17 and under. During the session, the Ministry for Women, Children, and Social Protection, in conjunction with Dr. Leigh-Ashley, chief gender advisor at UNFPA, presented a Gender Analysis of the Online Safety Act. Additionally, Director of Children Arieta Tagivetaua discussed provisions regarding the creation, possession, and trafficking of child pornography materials as laid out in the Child Care and Protection Act 2024.
Co-chaired by Deputy Prime Minister and Minister for Communications Manoa Kamikamica, the meeting addressed the increasing concerns about the accessibility of pornography to minors and its harmful impact on their well-being. Key topics of discussion included developing frameworks to restrict children’s access to explicit content, implementing strategies to lower overall pornography consumption, and updates from three working groups that are dedicated to policy and legislation, survivor support and empowerment, and technological solutions.
The task force also leveraged insights from Australia’s experience in curbing pornography-related issues. Attendees underscored the importance of filling existing gaps within the legal framework, drafting new policies to tackle the issue comprehensively, and establishing strong support systems for those affected by pornography-related abuse.
This meeting reaffirms the shared dedication of all involved parties to safeguard children and foster a more secure online environment for everyone.
