Former CEO of the Fiji Broadcasting Corporation (FBC), Riyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, and the current Chief Financial Officer, Vimlesh Sagar, have been granted 30 days to examine 69 proposed documents pertinent to their ongoing legal proceedings. This decision was made by Magistrate Charles Ratakele after both parties requested additional time to respond to the pretrial conference minutes.

During a recent court session, it was noted that Sayed-Khaiyum faces serious charges, including abuse of office and general dishonesty, linked to actions taken without the FBC board’s approval, resulting in significant financial losses. Specifically, he is accused of pursuing five legal actions between July 1, 2017, and January 31, 2023, costing the corporation approximately $138,813.37. Additionally, he stands accused of bypassing the tender process for purchasing a vehicle, leading to a further alleged loss of $84,470.

On the other hand, Sagar is charged with general dishonesty for approving payments to R Patel Lawyers without board consent, which amounted to $15,075.88 from January 1 to December 31 of the previous year.

While the case has been adjourned until July 3, it emphasizes the ongoing struggle for transparency and accountability in corporate governance within public sector organizations in Fiji. As these legal proceedings unfold, there is hope that they will lead to reinforced ethical standards and protect the interests of stakeholders, ultimately restoring trust in institutions like the FBC.

The upcoming trial offers all parties a significant opportunity to clarify the actions taken and the related allegations, potentially fostering improved governance practices in the long run.
