Aiyaz Sayed-Khaiyum, the former Attorney-General, has refuted allegations that a conversation he had with suspended Director of Public Prosecutions, Christopher Pryde, was linked to an ongoing investigation by the Criminal Investigations Department. During the initial day of Pryde’s tribunal hearing at the Court of Appeal in Suva, Sayed-Khaiyum clarified that their discussion was focused on personal matters concerning their children and had no relation to the investigation.
On February 28, 2023, Sayed-Khaiyum and Pryde were photographed together at a diplomatic gathering while the Criminal Investigation Department was simultaneously investigating Sayed-Khaiyum, with the details already submitted to the Office of the DPP. Pryde is currently suspended with full pay after being ordered to attend a tribunal due to allegations of misbehavior.
Sayed-Khaiyum, while on the stand, indicated that he engaged in conversation with several individuals that evening, and claimed that evidence presented in the form of a photograph was misleading as it portrayed him as only talking to Pryde, omitting the presence of others. Asked about the duration of their talk, Sayed-Khaiyum could not specify but insisted their conversation did not pertain to his case.
The tribunal also addressed allegations regarding a monthly superannuation payment of $1,000 to Pryde that was supposedly processed without appropriate approval. Sayed-Khaiyum stated that this issue should be reviewed by the Judicial Services Commission, clarifying that he played a minimal role in these fiscal decisions.
Minister for Justice Siromi Turaga, while giving evidence, noted that both men were seen isolated during the Japanese Emperor’s birthday celebration and described their lengthy discussion as “unbecoming and unethical.” He argued that the sensitive nature of the investigation made their private conversation inappropriate. Turaga claimed that Sayed-Khaiyum dominated the exchange, while Pryde acquiesced. Turaga later detailed that Pryde expressed regret for his poor judgment and subsequently issued an apology to him.
The tribunal proceedings continue, with the matter being adjourned until today.
This ongoing case underscores the importance of transparency and integrity in public office, shedding light on the relationships and interactions that can influence judicial processes. The outcome may serve as a significant precedent for future conduct among public officials. As the tribunal progresses, it remains crucial to uphold principles of justice and accountability within the governance framework.
