Former schoolteacher Kishore Kumar has chosen to be represented by the Legal Aid Commission in relation to the State’s appeal concerning his previous case. The appeal, brought forth by the Office of the Director of Public Prosecutions, is seeking to establish guidelines for future cybercrime cases. This legal matter was addressed before Justice Siainiu Fa’alogo Bull at the High Court in Suva on a recent date.

Kumar had been charged with making false pornographic claims against Assistant Foreign Affairs Minister Lenora Qereqeretabua. The charges against him included six counts of causing harm through electronic communications and one count of criminal intimidation. In April, his initial sentence of 32 months was suspended for a period of five years following his admission to St Giles Hospital for psychiatric treatment, after which he was released into outpatient care with a designated case manager.

In addition to the allegations involving Qereqeretabua, Kumar faced another charge related to a video in which he made derogatory remarks about Agni Deo Singh, the Minister for Employment. For this incident, he received a separate 12-month suspended jail term.

Justice Bull has postponed the hearing for Kumar to finalize his legal representation and establish a schedule for upcoming proceedings. The appeal is set to resume on August 22, highlighting an ongoing dialogue about accountability within the context of digital interactions and online misconduct.

This case not only illustrates the legal repercussions of cybercrime but also underscores the pressing issues surrounding digital harassment and the broader societal obligations to ensure responsible online conduct. Continued discussions resulting from such legal proceedings may foster a safer digital environment, encouraging respect and responsibility among online users.
