Families from Koro in Levuka, Lomaiviti, came together with unshakeable enthusiasm as they awaited the arrival of MV Captain Inoke, a vessel launched by Goundar Shipping Limited. This occasion held special significance for the Ratotodro family, as the ship bears the name of their late patriarch, Captain Inoke Ratotodro.
Melaia Ratotodro, Captain Inoke’s eldest daughter, was visibly emotional as the ship docked at Port Mua-i-Walu, reminiscing about and honoring her father’s legacy. “Our dad, who was one of the longest-serving members of Goundar Shipping, passed away last October, and in his memory, the company has named this vessel after him,” she shared. “We may miss him dearly, but we are grateful for what the company has done. He worked diligently for the company for the last 30 years.”
Celebrating this new addition to the fleet, Goundar Shipping’s Managing Director, George Goundar, recalled how closely he worked with Captain Inoke. “He was a close friend who I dearly miss. When I founded this company in 2011, he supported me and aided in its initial setup. He contributed invaluable knowledge on maritime operations and played a crucial role in the company,” Goundar reminisced.
The MV Captain Inoke is captained by Sainimere Qutonilaba, a 31-year-old maritime professional from Savudrodro, Savusavu, Vanualevu. She joined Goundar Shipping as a cadet in 2011 and has successfully brought several vessels into the company’s fleet from abroad. A traditional ceremony preceded the ship tour, underscoring the community’s deep-rooted customs and values in celebrating such significant milestones.
