The Navusabalavu landowning unit in Tavualevu Village, Tavua, has expressed commitment to collaborating with the Government to address the complexities arising from the contentious 999-year lease agreement. Trustee Ovini Bokini Uqeuqe stated that discussions surrounding compensation are ongoing and that a decision on this front will only follow thorough consultations with all stakeholders, including the tenants.
“We are focused on a solution-based approach,” Mr. Uqeuqe emphasized, highlighting the importance of dialogue among the Navusabalavu mataqali, the Tilivasewa mataqali, the iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB), and Government representatives. He expressed gratitude towards TLTB for its courageous decision to terminate the longstanding lease agreement.
Mr. Uqeuqe noted that this termination signifies an acknowledgment of the issues inherent in the previous agreement. He commended TLTB’s consultative strategy, which aims to address challenges amicably, ensuring that all parties involved, including current tenants, are part of the decision-making process.
“This is a significant step forward after years of striving to resolve the challenges connected to the 999-year lease. We are optimistic about moving ahead with the development of new lease agreements,” concluded Mr. Uqeuqe.
This situation reflects a broader movement toward more equitable land management practices, where open communication and stakeholder involvement can lead to fairer outcomes for all affected parties. The hope is that these cooperative efforts will yield positive results for the community and foster stronger relationships moving forward.
