The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a final reminder to 14,661 tenants who currently owe lease arrears amounting to $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to clear their outstanding payments promptly to prevent potential legal consequences.
Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services at TLTB, underscored the necessity of addressing these arrears quickly. He stated that timely payments are essential to ensure that landowners receive their lease payments without delay. Tuwai emphasized the Board’s commitment to collaborating with tenants in resolving these issues but warned that outstanding arrears need immediate attention to avert further legal actions.
He also reminded tenants of their responsibility to pay lease rental and administration fees in advance on January 1 and July 1 each year, as outlined in their lease agreements. This diligence not only helps to avoid litigation but also facilitates the Board’s ability to distribute lease payments to landowners efficiently.
Tenants whose leases fall into specific categories are encouraged to visit TLTB offices and consult with the arrears recovery team, with part payments being accepted under certain conditions. Tuwai recommended tenants seek financial support from commercial banks, assuring them that TLTB has established arrangements to assist in this matter.
Furthermore, Tuwai stressed the urgency of clearing any outstanding payments as delays could lead to serious repercussions, including the publication of tenants’ names in media outlets if arrears are not settled by November 30, 2024. Legal proceedings may follow, which could result in lease cancellations and the loss of property.
In a positive light, this situation presents an opportunity for tenants to engage with the TLTB management and explore financial solutions and support options. By addressing their lease payments promptly, tenants can ensure their continued occupancy and financial stability while respecting the rights of landowners.
