The iTaukei Land Trust Board (TLTB) has issued a critical notice to 14,661 tenants who are facing outstanding lease arrears amounting to $16.7 million. The Board is urging these tenants to settle their debts promptly to avoid potential legal repercussions.

Isoa Tuwai, the general manager of Estate Services, highlighted the importance of timely payments to ensure the smooth distribution of lease payments to landowners. He reiterated the obligation of tenants to pay their lease rental and administration fees, which are due on January 1 and July 1 each year, as specified in their lease agreements. This practice not only helps avoid litigation but also facilitates timely payments to landowners.

Tuwai encouraged tenants to consult with the Board’s arrears recovery teams for assistance, noting that part payments can be accepted under certain conditions. Additionally, he mentioned that TLTB has made arrangements with commercial banks for tenants seeking financial support. The Board is keen on working collaboratively with tenants to resolve their arrears effectively.

Moreover, tenants are reminded that if they do not settle their overdue payments by November 30, 2024, the Board may resort to publishing their names in print media, and legal action could lead to lease cancellation and property loss.

For more information or inquiries, tenants can reach out to the TLTB through the provided mobile contact number.

This situation underscores the importance of financial responsibility among tenants, as it directly affects the well-being of landowners who rely on these lease payments for their sustenance. It’s a call for tenants to take proactive steps towards settling their debts, fostering an environment of mutual support and responsibility within the community.
