Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci, known as the Tui Nadi, has stepped down from his position as president of the People’s Alliance party. He confirmed his resignation during the party’s executive council meeting last week.

At 70 years old, Ratu Vuniyani cited two primary reasons for his decision to resign. “Firstly, I have accomplished what I set out to do in forming the party,” he stated, referring to the successful campaign to challenge and ultimately unseat the FijiFirst party. He regarded this achievement as a significant milestone in his leadership.

Additionally, he expressed a desire to prioritize his health and well-being. “I don’t want to bear the pressures of both the presidency and my chief role in Nadi,” he explained, indicating a preference to focus solely on his responsibilities as Tui Nadi. He believes it is the appropriate time to hand over leadership to someone else, dismissing rumors of disagreements within the party as misinformation.

Ratu Vuniyani extended his gratitude to the party, its members, and his supporters. He also noted that Ratu Josefa Dimuri, the vice president, is currently serving as the acting president.
