The Ministry of iTaukei Affairs is set to reassign former Permanent Secretary Pita Tagicakirewa to a new role upon his return from medical leave, as confirmed by Luke Rokovada, chairperson of the Public Service Commission (PSC). Tagicakirewa, who has been in the position since November 2021, is expected to resume his duties on June 23, after completing his medical leave and taking any outstanding annual leave entitlements.

During his absence, Jone Navakamocea was appointed acting Permanent Secretary as of March 31, 2025. Navakamocea, who previously served as the Deputy Secretary for iTaukei Affairs, brings over 30 years of experience in various senior government roles, including in the Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Prime Minister’s Office. His academic credentials include a Master of Science in Macroeconomics, Policy, and Planning in Developing Countries from the University of Bradford, England.

The ministry’s statement regarding Tagicakirewa’s reassignment emphasized his readiness to accept any role designated by the PSC, showcasing his commitment to the public service. His tenure as Permanent Secretary has been marked by significant contributions to developing iTaukei institutions, cultural preservation efforts, and reforms in land administration and traditional governance.

The transition in leadership within the ministry reflects a broader trend in government circles towards ensuring experienced personnel guide key departments, thereby fostering stability and continuity in governance. This change is seen as a positive step towards enhancing the focus on economic empowerment and cultural heritage for the iTaukei community.

The ministry is expected to clarify Tagicakirewa’s new responsibilities and role soon, continuing the commitment to supporting the needs of the iTaukei people. Under Navakamocea’s interim leadership, there is optimism that the ministry will maintain its developmental momentum during this transitional phase.
