The Construction Energy & Timber Workers Union of Fiji has called for a leadership change at Energy Fiji Ltd (EFL). Union secretary John Paul expressed his concerns following the advertisement for the CEO position last weekend.

Paul highlighted that EFL has faced numerous challenges, particularly regarding climate change and an over-reliance on diesel fuel for energy generation. He pointed out a significant shortage of skilled workers at EFL, attributing it to inadequate working conditions under the current CEO’s leadership.

There is hope that the new CEO will prioritize a shift away from diesel-generated energy toward more sustainable options like solar, dam, and wind energy, as well as improving wages and working conditions for staff.

The Minister responsible for EFL, Prof Biman Prasad, acknowledged the board’s recommendation to advertise the CEO position but refrained from discussing specifics about the leadership transition. Efforts to reach the current CEO, Hasmukh Patel, were unsuccessful.

This leadership change presents an opportunity for EFL to align itself with sustainable energy practices and improve employee satisfaction, paving the way for a more resilient and eco-friendly future for Fiji’s energy sector.
