Ratu Vuniyani Navuniuci, the Tui Nadi, has stepped down as the president of the People’s Alliance party. He announced his resignation, which he submitted during last week’s executive council meeting, on Monday.
At the age of 70, Ratu Vuniyani cited two key reasons for his departure from the leadership role. He stated, “First, I have achieved what I had committed to in the formation of the party,” referring to the successful effort to defeat the FijiFirst party, which he considers a significant accomplishment.
He expressed the need to prioritize his health and well-being, noting the challenges of balancing his responsibilities as both president and Tui Nadi. “I chose to focus on one role, which is the Tui Nadi,” he explained, mentioning that it felt appropriate to pass the leadership on to someone else at this time. He also addressed rumors suggesting disagreements with party procedures, labeling them as misinformation.
Ratu Vuniyani expressed gratitude towards the party, its members, and supporters. Following his resignation, vice-president Ratu Josefa Dimuri is expected to serve as the acting president.
