President Ratu Wiliame Katonivere has called on the paramount chief of Naitasiri, Ratu Inoke Takiveikata, to take strong action against the escalating illicit drug crisis threatening the community. He voiced his worries regarding the rising drug use nationwide.

Ratu Wiliame made these remarks during the Naitasiri Provincial Council meeting held at Tamavua Village in Suva. He emphasized the need for a collective effort to improve the province, urging the vanua to collaborate with youth and the community to tackle the prevalent social issues.

“I have witnessed the harmful impact of drugs on our young people, and I am genuinely concerned for both current and future generations. It is crucial for us to come together and ensure that the vanua and the church unite to shield our children,” Ratu Wiliame stated.

He also highlighted the importance of reinforcing cultural values and respect within families and the community, suggesting that younger individuals who have dropped out of school should be encouraged to enroll in technical schools to help them overcome social challenges and contribute to community development.

“We should refrain from blaming others. It is our responsibility to confront this issue,” Ratu Wiliame remarked. He advocated for a comprehensive village profile initiative to enable the government to provide targeted support that would benefit the people of Naitasiri.

In addition, he urged the community to take action against Non-Communicable Diseases (NCDs) by embracing healthier eating habits. “The Ministry of Health has reported that 80 percent of deaths are attributed to NCDs. We need to reflect on what actions we can take as a province to tackle this issue,” he said.

“I encourage you all to consider how our ancestors lived and the foods they consumed. We must prioritize eating the food that we cultivate ourselves,” Ratu Wiliame concluded.
